JUSTIFICATION & IMPACT

The growth of the mining industry has led to a high demand for explosives. Currently, these products are mostly imported, making the industry dependent on a long and vulnerable supply chain.

The Courant Project directly addresses this growing need while replacing a carbon-intensive imported product with a locally manufactured, green alternative. This process uses green hydrogen and nitrogen from the air, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions compared to traditional methods that rely on natural gas.

Beyond reducing the mining industry's carbon footprint, this project supports sustainable production, contributes to the energy transition, and helps fight climate change.

In addition to its strategic role in the mining sector and its environmental impact, the Courant project is a key economic driver for the Côte-Nord region. By establishing a new, sustainable industry that diversifies the regional economy, it strengthens the area's position as an emerging industrial hub.

From an economic standpoint, this $2 billion project will have a major impact on the region. It will create 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and generate 300 direct jobs once the complex is operational. Along with boosting local procurement, it will give mining companies a competitive edge by providing access to green explosives while contributing to the development of a strong regional industrial ecosystem.
